protein powder addict

hello, my name is Taylor.  and i’m a protein powder addict.

my goal in life is to try every single flavor out there.

just kidding.  but really, i LOVE protein powder. WHY? to make me big and bulky?! to grow muscles?!

no and no. i actually like protein powder because it helps me with my sweet tooth and i can make cookies, mug cakes, cakes, brownies, etc. GUILT free AND help build lean muscle at the same time!!! #WINNING!

now, people ask me a lot how many times a day i drink my protein shakes.

answer: zero. it’s VERY rare you’ll find me knockin’ back a blender bottle filled with this yummy stuff. why?? isn’t that what protein powder is there for?! to get some GAINZZ after you work out?  yes, yes it is.

but i like to rely on protein from FOOD sources vs. a powder. i like to EAT my calories and macros not drink them.  to each his own. because i know a lot of people who like to drink their protein powder, which is totally fine.  the only time i actually drink a protein shake, is if i know i’ll be running errands or something after i go to the gym, i’ll prepare one then, that way i can get some protein in me after i work out before i eat a few hours later.

getting protein in within 30-45 minutes after you work out is SUPER important to help build lean muscle.  so, whether you drink your protein powders, bake with them (ME ME ME) or whatever your little heart desires, i figured i’d share with you all my “reviews” of each protein powder i own.  some i like more than others, some bake better, some dissolve better in water than others, etc.

the world of protein powders is endless and overwhelming. casein vs whey. soy vs. brown rice.  i’ll help take the guessing work out so you’re not dropping up to $50 on something that tastes like shit and is chunky when you pour that water in your blender bottle.

so here we go… a peak into an addicts protein cabinet. (or designated bar-cart for me)

Optimum Nutrition: Whey.  Mocha Cappachino
Rating flavor: 9

Rating with water alone: 9
this is one of my go-to flavors when i drink a protein shake.  big scoop into a blender ball, fill 3/4 with water.  it blends really well with water, rare that there’s any ‘chunks’ and it tastes SO freaking good.  sometimes when i have leftover coffee, i’ll add a splash of it into this with some ice of course and some almond milk. definitely a must-have flavor. (this is my 2nd jug i’ve owned. so if i go back for 2nds that means a lot)

Optimum Nutrition: Whey.   Rocky Road

Rating flavor: 6
Rating with water alone: 4

I got this because i figured it would taste really good in my mug-cakes.  it’s OK. you can definitely taste the almond flavor in it.  i tried it for ice cream and it blended really well with the greek yogurt.  this is NOT a flavor i would drink, just because the taste is pretty boring.

Vita Cost’s brand ARO. Casein   Chocolate
Rating flavor: 9

Rating with water: 3
I love love love vita costs’ brand Aro.  Their pre-workout is one of my favorites actually and their products are HIGH quality at a low price. win win.  this is one of my first flavors of casein i bought when first trying out casein.  casein is a slow digesting protein that you drink before bed so it keeps your body “going” while you’re sleeping. aka revving up your metabolism.  this is something i wouldn’t mix with water and use in my mug-cakes before bed.  chocolate protein powders usually do NOT taste like chocolate, at all, but this one actually is really rich and in the ingredients it HAS cocoa powder in it, so i trust it.
so if you’re looking to add casein into your nightly regimen mug-cake but don’t’ want to drop a lot of $$ this it.  i just wish ARO would make other casein flavors. until then, here’s some chocolate!

Cellucor WHEY.  Cookies n Creme

Rating flavor: 10

Rating with water: 10

this is one of my newest loves of life.  holy hell it’s SO good. i literally has CHOCOLATE FLAKES  in it. i mean come on…. i’ve yet to bake with this because i actually LOVE it in water to drink. it tastes like a wendy’s chocolate frosty. no joke.  i’ll throw some ice in a blender, a splash of almond milk, some water, a big scoop of this. BAM. BUY THIS FLAVOR!!!

Vita Cost’s ARO: Whey   Chocolate Peanut Butter

Rating flavor: 9

Rating with water: 2

I would give it a 10, but it doesn’t mix well with water ALONE. BUT it’s SO DAMN GOOD IN EVERYTHING ELSE.  this is easily our 5th tub of this flavor.  again, chocolate flavors usually aren’t good but ARO kicks ass with their REAL chocolate in their powders.  i use this for my peanut butter raw cake, mug-cakes, smoothies, etc. again, SO cheap in price and great quality! i highly recommend. again, just don’t mix this with water alone, doesn’t blend well.

Optimum Nutrition Casein  Chocolate Cake Batter

Rating flavor: 8

Rating with water: 2

Again, casein doesn’t really mix well with water, it “gloops” up really quickly, that’s why it’s so awesome for mug cakes.  i’ve only used this 2 times so far in my mug cakes and it’s pretty damn good.  it bakes well and the flavor is there.  i don’t knwo about ‘cake batter’ but it’s definitely chocolate with a little extra sweetness.

Muscle Milk Whey: Strawberry Banana
Rating flavor: 10
Rating with water: 10
SO.DAMN.GOOD. so good.  and SO cheap but really high quality!!  I finally went outside my optimun nutrition, cellucor, aro flavors and gave Muscle Milk a try.  if you’re a GNC member, these big tubs are usually on sale for $25! win! this was the first flavor i got from them and i’m so happy i took the plunge.  the powder is SO fine and fluffy, which is a good thing because it mixes with water SO well.  it’s like silky, unlike other protein powders they can be a little “harsh”.  this is a good one for smoothies, throw in a banana, a table spoon of peanutbutter, ice, almond milk and a scoop of this and you’ve got a REALLY good post-workout smoothie.  i don’t bake with this brand because i don’t think it will either taste good in a cake or bake well because it is so fine.

Monster Milk whey: banana creme

Rating flavor: 9
Rating with water: 7
SO good and again, just like the Muscle Milk, its’ so fluffy and silky, so it’s smooth when going down.  the flavor is on point and good in smoothies with peanutbutter.

Optimum Nutrition Casein: Vanilla
Rating flavor: 4
Rating with water: 1
sooooo clearly this is my least favorite.  maybe because i used to use this for my “ice cream” for too long before branching out to other flavors. but now that i’ve tried other flavors, i just cant seem to go back to this one.  it doesn’t taste like vanilla and it has a weird after taste.  so in other words, avoid this flavor. again, casein doesn’t mix well with water, but it may work well for a pudding of some sort because of the flavor? i don’t know, but don’t waste your $.

Cellucor Whey CAKE BATTERRRRRR!

Rating flavor: 10+++++

Rating with water: 9

i mean………….. it’s hard to explain how good this is.  when cellucor came out with it a few weeks ago it was ALL over the place.  i saw it being put in homemade poptarts, ice cream, cookies, cakes, cupcakes. EVERYTHING. I.HAD.TO.HAVE.IT.  and it’s easily my favorite protein powder EVER. it has colorful little sprinkle flakes IN it, i mean COME ON!! the smell alone when you take off the lid is SO flipping good. it’s amazing in EVERYTHING. i haven’t mixed it with water, because it’s too good to waste drinking it, but by the texture, i would assume it blends pretty well since the cookies n creme blends well with water.  GO GET THIS FLAVOR. YOU WON’T REGRET IT. i use it on top of my pancakes, mix it with some greek yogurt and you have a BANGIN’ “frosting”!! seriously.

Optimum Nutrition Whey: Strawberry banana

Rating flavor: 9

Rating with water: 9
i’d give it a 10, but now that i have the muscle milk strawberry banana, this got knocked down a notch. again, good in a smoothie with some peanutbutter, and mixes well with water.  but if you want a strawberry banana flavor, go with the muscle milk because 1. it’s cheaper and 2. it tastes better

Jarrow Brown Rice Protein: Vanilla

Flavor rating: 10
Rating with water: no clue

i, no joke, have like 5 tubs of this “on hand” at all times.  i use this every single day in my pancakes. ive tested  A LOT of different protein powders for pancakes, and this one wins. hands down. others dry out your pancakes, taste weird, but this, this is SO good and makes your pancakes extra fluffy.  i wouldn’t ever drink this with water, because it’s not really “vanilla-y” that’s why it’s perfect for pancakes alone.  so if you’re wanting to jump on the protein pancake trend, this is it! and brown rice protein is 100% derived from brown rice so it digests much longer than whey, aka: keeping you full longer.  GET THIS.

BSN whey “dessert”   Fresh Cinnamon
Rating flavor: 9

Rating with water: no clue
BANGIN. my first BSN “dessert” line powder.  i would give it a 10, but it’s almost TOO sweet.  but it does truly taste like a cinnamon bun and smells like it too.  i use this in “frosting” for cakes, i also like to put 1/2 scoop in heated up almond milk to top off my pancakes as “syrup”.  i’ve never used it with water because i think it’d, again, be too sweet.  i’m definitely eager to try some other BSN dessert line products.  worth the $ for sure.  i need to find a good gluten free cinnamon bun recipe actually, this would be on.point.

Plant Fusion brown rice    Chocolate
rating flavor: 4

rating with water: 1
soooo this is when i learned chocolate protein powders aren’t good. don’t buy this. SOMETIMES when i want a little chocolate flavor in my pancakes i’ll add a 1/2 scoop of this. but it’s rare. i may just toss it soon because i really don’t ever use it.
i’m not even going to find the link because its’ that gross lol

Muscle Milk Whey   Graham Cracker

Rating flavor: 10+++

Rating with water: 10++
this is my newest flavor. finding it online and reading the reviews I was a little skeptacle… graham cracker?? but i pulled the trigger bc the reviews were THAT good. and HOLY HELL. besides the Cake Batter flavor, THIS is my other favorite. it literally SMELLS like a big tub of graham cracker. i never thought DRINKING a graham cracker would taste good, but it DOES.  i’ll easily make a smoothie with this, a splash of the muscle milk strawberry banana protein, ice and some almond milk.  BEST. SMOOTHIE EVER. best. i haven’t baked with it but i think i’ll try to make a “pie crust” soon with it.  GET THIS.

Optimum Nutrition Whey: Chocolate Mint
Rating flavor: 8

Rating with water: 5
It sounded good when reading the reviews, but it’s more chocolatey than minty. i’ve used it once or twice in my mug-cakes but it is perfect for my ‘thin mint’ cookies!  with water, not so much.

Well there you have it!!!  Again, these can all be found at other stores, but the links i included are where i get them and i price/compare a lot – so these are the best $ to get them at.  Hope this is helpful when deciding your next protein powder in that big crazy world of 100+ flavors/brands!!! ALWAYS look at the sugar and fat content, because some brands sneak shit into their powders.
bake, drink, whatever, away!!!  just don’t RELY on protein powders to grow muscles, eat your chicken, eggs, etc. to help build lean muscle. protein powder is there to make life a little more exciting and easy in this lifestyle!!
